Why I Love Virtual School Visits - Resources for Teachers
Where Fleur shares her love for school visits, teacher resources, and makes plans for spring.
It’s no secret that I love doing virtual author visits—they’re just the best way of connecting with kids. I read aloud, share book recommendations, and listen to what books recommend I read (my favorite part).
The extra special part is connecting with teachers and librarians. Those educators show up every day to teach, despite the educational landscape that seems to get more challenging every year. Politics, parents, pay—the three Ps make it a profession it’s brave to be in.
Teachers and librarians rule.
And I want to help. So I’ve created some activities, book club questions and videos to help support educators (that’s homeschoolers, too).
You can find them on this page.
Here’s a picture of a kind teacher who went to visit the Stanley Hotel.
NEW
I so enjoyed World Read Aloud Day, but was booked within a few days… And I want to do more of these short 15 min virtual visits.
I’m going to open up 10 slots for a short virtual Read Aloud visit. These visits are simple: I introduce myself, read a chapter from one of my books, I recommend a book or two, and then the kids ask some questions. It’s short, fun, and makes the book come to life. Author visits really motivate readers.

How the Writing is Going
Trucking along at a slightly faster pace, I was able to write 5k words this week. I found that just cranking up the heat a little bit pays off not only in words but in immersion: I found it easier to dive back in every day. I’m writing absurdly early in the morning, so I can thumb my nose at the sun.
I’m also tinkering with some new workshop and class material. More on that in the coming months.
Tell me: is there a specific topic you’d like to hear me talk about?
What else I’m up to
Mid-February is right about the time I start to think about moving to a warm country to escape winter… I need to practice some selfcare, as the cool people say.
I’m hoping to put up some bookshelves and pot plants. Next week brings warmer temps to Colorado, so I hope to take a hike as well. All this computer time makes my eyes bleed…
Where I’m Going
Planning is starting for my trip to the Texas Library Association Conference in San Antonio in April. Daybreak on Raven Island is on the next Texas Bluebonnet List; I’m so honored because this list is very selective and chosen by amazing librarians. If you’re going, drop me a line. I hope to see some of San Antonio while I’m there, it’s an intriguing place…
I’ll also be part of the faculty at Pikes Peak Writers Conference in Colorado Springs, at the very end of April. If you are a writer or industry professional, maybe I’ll see you there?
Weekly Floof
It snowed again yesterday, and Floof had the right idea on what to do.
I would love a whole post about your school reach out strategy, and how you connect with schools to book these visits!
