Do You Listen to Music While You Write?
Where Fleur is indecisive about music while writing, and there's a tiny (cat) house dispute.
Do you listen to music while you write? This question often comes up among writers, and the answers are all over the place. Some writers listen to classical music, some have a playlist for each book. Me, I could take it or leave it. Once I’m in the zone, you could have a cocktail party in the other room, and I wouldn’t know.
That said, sometimes I play music to get me in the right mindset and mood.
The closest I get to music that gets me fired up to write is probably Black Violin. I discovered them many years ago; they’re a violin hip-hop group and non-profit that does amazing stuff.
Black Violin is playing in Pueblo, Aspen and Denver for the next week or so and I have tickets. I’m very excited to go see them, though I will be wearing my mask and bathing in hand sanitizer afterward.
If you’re curious, here’s a clip of the tour.
How about you? Do listen to music while you write or otherwise work?
What I’m Writing
The WWII novel is coming along, and I’m enjoying how it is taking on a life of its own. I have it tightly plotted but my characters are already coloring outside the lines. This is the best part. Still trucking along at 3K words this week.
I also added another 1K words to the writing craft book. This one is coming along a bit slower, but I’m approaching the finish line for the rough draft. It’s been fun putting my knowledge on paper like this.
Good News
I had some (unexpected) good writing news on Friday, related to a short story. Can’t share it yet, but I’ll share these beautiful tulips my daughter got me to celebrate. If you’ve known me for a while, you’ll know that I also like to celebrate with cake. But by the time I took this photo, I already ate it…
More details when I can share them. I hope you’ve had some good news this January as well.
Where I’ll Be
Other than the cool Black Violin concert, you can find me hiking around town. The weather was nice enough last week for me to have an actual lunchtime hike at Garden of the Gods, and it was (pun intended) heavenly. The coming days should bring good hiking weather again, and I’m determined to walk more.
2024 motto: Less sitting, more walking.
This coming week is the calm before the World Read Aloud Day storm; I usually am booked solid on the actual day, but also the days and week after it. Talking to kids is the best, so I’m looking forward to it.
Three Two Things
This week flew by, so I only stuck my head up to see what’s going in in the world for a split second… So I just have two things to share:
1. Although I love learning and have been enjoying Zoom workshops, sometimes you just need a break and watch some kittens. Here is my Humane Society’s kitten cam, for a moment of zen.
2. And if you really need a palate cleanser, here’s my front yard in the snow (on Friday). It really looks like a storybook…
Your Weekly Floof Chuchu
It’s not easy living with a Floof when you are a (much smaller) Chuchu cat. Here she is, guarding her spot in the cat house…
And here is Floof, taking over a few hours later…
How are you holding up this January…?
Instrumental jazz, classical, etc. I got into the habit while studying in college. Hadn't thought about movie scores. Will check that out.
Music while I write distracts me. I’m pretty distractable that’s why I don’t take my laptop to coffee places. Love the video though and it’s the kind of concert I’d attend. My two grand kitties are like yours, one takes over the younger one.
