December is for Wrapping (Up)
Where Fleur hikes, fosters floofs, and enjoys mysteries in all forms
December is always such a busy month. Lots of parties (even though I’m not much of a party animal), events, and wrapping up the things I was hoping to get done before year’s end. As much as I try not to get too hung up on where the calendar is when it comes to my writing, I do look at my goals for the year and take stock.
Also, here in Colorado, December still gives us a little opportunity to get outside and grab some rays. Or snow, depending on what strikes Mother Nature’s fancy. Either way, I try to go outside when I can.
Aside from hiking and wrapping up writing stuff, I’ve been busy getting the latest batch of foster kittens chunky, so they can go on to find forever homes. If you are local and are looking for a new best friend, these fluffies will be at the Colorado Springs Humane Society right after Christmas. I will miss the cute fluffiness (don’t tell Floof).
What I’m Writing
I finished the latest draft of my MG mystery—phew! There is more revision in my future, but for now I’m letting this puppy cool.
I’m revising the writing (non-fiction) craft book I’ve been tinkering with forever; it needs all the editing… But it’s a good change of pace.
Good News
I learned that Midnight at the Barclay Hotel was chosen for Saratoga, NY’s library program in 2025. It’s always an honor and such a joy to think that more kids will get hooked on mysteries…! It’s my not-so-secret agenda, you know.
What I’m Reading
Continuing my short story kick, I read Elly Griffith’s The Man in Black. It’s a collection of stories featuring the characters from her books, which was fun to read for me since I’m such a fan, especially of her Ruth Galloway books. Give it a read.
I’m also reading several unpublished manuscripts by MG authors, both WIP and early drafts from publishers. I feel lucky I get to do this sort of thing. There’s nothing like supporting another writer by being a mentor or providing a blurb.
Lift someone else up when you can, I say.
What I’m Watching
I watched A Man on the Inside, which is exactly the kind of TV show I love: a mystery, not to heavy but with character depth that is earned. Ted Danson is a gem. Watch it if you love a mystery that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still has heart.
Where I’m Going
For the moment, nowhere but the Colorado hiking trails and my office. It’s the Sunday of the year right now, perfect for taking a beat and planning the year ahead. I’m slooowwlyy looking at 2025, though my inner teenager wants to sleep in, eat junk food, and watch a lot of bad TV. Must be those dark winter days.
How’s your month looking…? Do you try to cram stuff in, or do you coast toward the new year…?
Your Weekly Floof
Just in case anyone was too smitten with the foster kittens, here is my Forever Floof, looking gorgeous as always. I’m a lucky cat guardian.
I feel like EVERYONE is watching Man on the Inside (I haven't seen it yet) and I just saw that there's a second season planned. In case you didn't know!
Congratulations on the Saratoga Community Read!
I recently read an adult mystery/thriller which was recommended by a good friend from Chicago and was thinking of you because I don't normally read anything this scary. It was overwritten (your writing is better, more nuanced) and I won't name it here but I am curious how you drop clues without overstating them so that your reader doesn't feel like they're being hit over the head with them. ;) It would be great to see you!
Man on the Inside was so good!
